The Times, Thursday, Jan 31, 1805; pg. 4; Issue 6244; col A A few nights ago, a desperate assault was committed on THOMAS ATKINSON, who is a partner in the cotton-manufactory, Carlisle, under the firm of HEYSHAM and Co. with intent, it is supposed, of robbing him. In riding between the above-named place and Stenton, about half past ten o'clock, at Gosling Sykes, where there is a narrow pass leading to a small bridge, he was attacked by two ruffians, who pulled him off horseback; and while he was stoutly conflicting with them, the spirited animal he rode upon set off homeward. Mr. A. vigorously defended himself, and had knocked down one of the assailants, when, as if to his assistance, the mare came galloping back, the distant clatter of whose feet so much disconcerted the villains, that they fled very hastily across the country, though one of them was much bruised; whereupon Mr. ATKINSON, with considerable property about him, joyfully remounted, and got safe home. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
