UNIVERSITY AND ECCLESIASTICAL INTELLIGENCE. (cont.)

OXFORD, MAY 15. - In congregation to-day the Rev. Richard G. MACMULLEN, was again presented for his
degree of Bachelor in Divinity, and the grace refused.

St. BEES. - We have been informed that the Rev. the Provost of Queen's College, Oxford, has
nominated the Rev. G. H. S. JOHNSON, M.A., Fellow and Tutor of the same college, to conduct the
annual examination of the scholars of the Grammar School of St. Bees, which is to commence on the
25th and end on the 28th of June next; and that at the close of the examination prizes will be given
to the most deserving boys in their respective classes. The school contains upwards of 140 scholars,
under the management of four masters, two of whom are graduates of Oxford.

FESTIVAL OF THE SONS OF THE CLERGY. - This festival took place on Thursday afternoon in St. Paul's
Cathedral; but not under the same circumstances as heretofore, the committee appointed by the
Archbishop of Canterbury having resolved to abandon the great orchestral arrangements, and confine
the solemnity to the simple performance of a full cathedral service, "with no instrumental
accompaniment except the organ." The principal reason for this departure from the established
practice was doubtless the desire to celebrate the festival in a manner more appropriate to the
place and occasion. Another reason for the change, and by no means an unimportant one, was the
general inadequacy of the pecuniary results, "the sums received at the cathedral having generally
exceeded only by a small amount the expenses incurred." We are happy to say there was an ample
attendance on this occasion; and that there is every prospect that the objects of the committee will
be realised as far as could reasonably be expected. A great number of church dignitaries assisted at
the festival yesterday, as well as the Duke of CAMBRIDGE, and several members of the nobility. The
Lord Mayor, Sheriffs and Aldermen, were also present in their robes of office.
