Upwards of seventy plans for the projected Derby Lunatic Asylum have
been sent in for inspection. The estimates vary from £13,000 to £75,000. The Duke of RUTLAND has let upwards of a thousand cottage garden allotments, generally limited to one-sixth of an acre, at a clear rent of 10s. a year. When the leisure evening hour is employed by a family in reading the page of instruction, there grows up insensibly in the younger members a love of home - a sentiment incompatible with some of the worst vices, and favourable to all the virtues. A curious instance of Russian justice is alluded to in the French journals. An old man, a Russian, has just published his memoirs, in which he declares that he passed 52 years of his life in toiling in the mines of Siberia, but that he was never tried, never condemned, and never even was informed why he was punished. We hear that Baroness LEHZEN, ci-devant lady attendant on her Majesty when Princess Victoria, is residing with her relatives in Germany, and is not expected to return to England, the Queen having, it is said, settled a liberal annuity on the Baroness, who was so many years attached to the household of her royal highness the Duchess of KENT. We believe we may confidently state that Norris Castle is actually purchased for the royal marine residence of the Queen and Prince Albert. The amount of the purchase is stated to be £60,000. Osborne House will also be occupied, but it will be for the exclusive use of the household. This will be found to be substantially correct. - Hampshire Advertiser. We believe that the noble Master of the Horse (the Earl of JERSEY) has lately made a reduction in the number of her Majesty's stud at the royal mews, in consequence of so many of the royal journeys being made by railway. It is now finally decided that the convicts BARBER and FLETCHER, under sentence of transportation for life, shall be immediately removed to her Majesty's Dockyard, Woolwich, and there put on board the Government transport Barossa, which is expected to leave for New South Wales in the course of a few days. We perceve that the NELSON dinner to the Greenwich Pensioners will be given on Friday week, the 24th instant. |
