PROPAGATION OF THE GOSPEL IN FOREIGN PARTS -

IMPORTANT MEETING.

CARLISLE, MAY 15, 1844.

A highly interesting and most important meeting, in aid of the Society for
the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, was held in the Assembly
Room of the Bush Hotel, on Wednesday last; and we noticed with much
satisfaction, that, although the meeting was not so numerously attended as
might have been expected from the great value of the society, many of the
principal families were present, and the attendance of the clergy of the
district was such as to prove that they, at least, are fully alive to the
importance of aiding the efforts of the oldest missionary society in
existence. Amongst the clergy present we noticed

The Chancellor of the Diocese.
Dr. JACKSON, Rector of Lowther.
Rev. Edward TUFNELL, of the Parent Society.
Rev. Edward SALKELD, Vicar of Aspatria.
Rev. Thomas WILKINSON, Vicar of Stanwix.
Rev. H. GOUGH, Head Master of the Grammar School.
Rev. James THWAYTES, Incumbent of Trinity Church.
Rev. William REES, Perpetual Curate of St. Mary's.
Rev. R. JACKSON, Wreay.
Rev. Edward BROWN, Precentor of Carlisle Cathedral.
Rev. Christopher PARKER, Keswick.
Rev. J. BROWN, Curate of Bowness.
Rev. J. KITTEN, Incumbent of Houghton.
Rev. -- DUGDALE, Dalston.
Rev. J. WARD, Curate of Christ's Church.
Rev. G. DACRE, Curate of Trinity Church.
Rev. -- SANDFORD, Curate of Brampton.
Rev. J. WILSON, Perpetual Curate of Grinsdale.
Rev. J. THOMLINSON, Vicar of Crosby.
Rev. J. ALDERSEY, Curate of Great Orton.
Rev. J. HEYSHAM, Sebergham.
Rev. J. VAUGHAN, Castle Carrick.
Rev. J. MARRIOTT, -----

On the motion of the Rev. Dr. JACKSON, seconded by the Rev. Mr. GOUGH, the
Rev. Walter FLETCHER, Chancellor of the Diocese, was called to the chair.

The Rev. CHAIRMAN, according to the usage at all the meetings of the
society, opened the proceedings with appropriate payer [sic], after which he
addressed the meeting, and expressed his regret that he had not the pleasure
of seeing the Lord Bishop of the Diocese, the right reverend president of
the society, in the chair on that occasion, as he was persuaded that his
presence would be highly beneficial to the society, and it was on many
accounts desirable. (Hear, hear.) But, although his lordship was not able to
be present, they knew that the society had the cordial sanction of their
Bishop, and that he warmly approved of the object which had brought them
together. (Hear, hear.) It was not to be expected that he should introduce
anything new on that occasion, for when a society had so often been highly
eulogized, individuals must feel baffled in their attempts to say anything
more as to its beneficial effects. It was an ancient society, having been in
active operation for nearly a century and half; but he thought it was but
little known in this diocese, and his brother clergymen would, he was sure
feel greatly obliged to the gentleman on his left, who had come no short
distance, and at no slight inconvenience, not to rebuke them for their
inactivity, but kindly to admonish them and stimulate them to greater
exertions. (Applause.)
