Carlisle Patriot - 18 May 1844
WORKINGTON. - The commission of the Synod of the Presbyterian Church in
England, appointed to recognise the Presbytery of the North West of England,
met in Workington on the 14th instant, at the hour of two o,clock, p.m., to
induct the Rev. T. TURBETT to the pastoral charge of the Presbyterian Church
in that place. The following are the names of the ministers who were
present: - The Rev. Dr. PATERSON, of Sunderland; the Rev. H. CAMPBELL, of
Manchester; the Rev. D. R. LOUSON, of Carlisle; the Rev. -- FERGUSON, of
Liverpool, with the Rev. Messrs. MARSHALL and LOWRY, from the Presbyterian
Church in Ireland. The Rev. -- FERGUSON, who had been appointed to preach on
the occasion, having, in cosequence of a misunderstanding as to the time of
meeting, arrived late, the Rev. Dr. PATERSON, who presided, delivered in the
absence of that gentleman an excellent sermon from Micah 5th chap. 4th
verse. Having then put the usual questions, and addressed an interesting and
affectionate charge to the pastor, he was followed by the Rev. Mr. LOUSON,
of Carlisle, who delivered a solemn and appropriate charge to the people,
and concluded with prayer and praise and the apostolic benediction. The
right hand of fellowship was given by the ministers to the newly inducted
pastor, which example was followed by all the members of the congregation.
The entire services were well calculated to interest, to edify, to make a
salutary and permanent impression on the minds of the highly respectable
audience who were in attendance. The solemn and interesting exercises of the
day having been terminated, the congregation entertained the members of the
commission, and the other rev. gentlemen who were present, at dinner in the
Old Crown Inn.

THE NATIONAL SOCIETY. - A sermon was preached in Arthuret church on the 5th
inst., by the Rev. William GRAHAM, in aid of the National Society for the
education of the poor in the principles of the Established Church, when the
sum of £2 10s. was collected. On Sunday evening last, a sermon for a
similar purpose was preached in the Trinity Church, Whitehaven, by the Rev.
T. DALTON, when the collection amounted to £6.
