Carlisle Patriot - 18 May 1844
FORSTER'S BANKRUPTCY. - Mr. BAKER, the official assignee has been busily
employed in Carlisle during the week paying the final dividend upon the
estate of the Messrs. FORSTER, and has discharged his arduous duties with a
degree of courtesy and consideration for the creditors, that has won for him
golden opinions. The system, however, has called forth an almost unanimous
expression of disapprobation, and it is generally thought that a circuit for
the determination of bankruptcy cases must finally be appointed. The
claimants whose dividends have been paid have averaged above 400 a day, and
generally speaking, the business has been transacted in a most satisfactory
manner.

CUMBERLAND INFIRMARY. - On Sunday, the 28th ultimo, a collection was made in
Gilcrux Church, in aids of the funds of this institution, after a sermon by
the Rev. J. H. WHITELOCK, which amounted to £1.

CARLISLE CRICKET CLUB. - The first field day for the season was held on
Wednesday last, when the attendance was very numerous and respectable. The
members contrived to separate into two very good elevens, and an excellent
and well contested game took place. The club will in future hold their field
days on Thursdays, and the season promises to be a brilliant one. It is
understood that the 43rd regiment, who relieve the 93rd can muster a good
eleven, so that some spirited matches may be expected. We always think it a
matter of regret that this fine and truly English game is not better
supported in Carlisle.

BIBLE SOCIETY. - On Wednesday evening week, the annual meeting of the
Whitehaven Auxiliary Bible Society was held in the Friends' Meeting House,
Mr. Ralph FORSTER, in the chair. The Rev. H. A. BROWN, rector, of Toft, in
Lincolnshire, gave the meeting a detailed account of the operations of the
society for the past year, and stated its financial condition to be very
prosperous, the income of the society during the past year having exceeded
that of the preceding year by £6000. - On Thursday evening, the anniversary
meeting of the Workington Auxiliary Bible Society was held, which the Rev.
H. A. BROWN also attended, and addressed the meeting at considerable length,
after which a liberal collection was made. - The reverend gentleman also
attended the annual meeting of the Cockermouth Branch of the British and
Foreign Bible Society, which took place in the Court House on the Tuesday
previous. The proceedings, which the Rev. Mr. BROWN's statement rendered
uncommonly interesting, were terminated by a collection, which amounted to
£7 4s. 4d.
