Carlisle Patriot - 18 May 1844
Three troops of the Cumberland and Westmorland Yeomanry assembled on the
15th inst., on the Race Ground, at Penrith, under Col. HASELL.

We learn that the committee of the Liverpool Registry for British and
Foreign Shipping, have appointed Mr. John ATKINSON, of Workington, surveyor
for that port and Harrington.

It has been resolved to hold a wool fair annually in Newcastle on the first
Wednesday in July, the fair to be held in the Corn Market, and the committee
on trade and commerce to take preliminary steps for establishing it.

Mr. Pattinson HAYTON, assistant tide surveyor at Maryport, has been promoted
by the honourable Commissioners of Customs to the situation of tide surveyor
at the port of Montrose.

The Lords Commissioners of the Treasury decline, it seems, to raise
Newcastle to the rank of a first-class port, on the ground that the proposed
advancement would have no other effect than that of raising the salaries of
the Custom House officers.

The Queen has been pleased to appoint Major General John GREY, of Morwick,
Northumberland, companion of the most honourable military order of the Bath,
to be a Knight Commander of the said order, in consideration of his
distinguished services at the recent battle of Gwalior, in India.
