Page 6

On Tuesday morning thirteen men were arrested at Harrington and conveyed
to Whitehaven Police Station.  A special Magistrate's Court was held.
The prisoners were brought before Mr T Machell.  They were :

Thomas Lennon, Shore Hill
Thos. Lennon Junior
John James Fearon, Shore Hill
Robert William Wilson, Curwen Street
Jsames McMullen, Curwen Street
Lewis Robinson, Christian Street
Charles Lennon, Shore Hill
William Flynn, William Street
Peter Doulaghan, Rose Hill
Henry Anderson, Henry Street
Ed. Collis, Henry Street
Henry Hughes, Henry Street
Bernard Murphy, Henry Street

all of Harrington and described as dock labourers.

Mr E Atter, Whitehaven appeared for the prisoners.

Superintendent Hope said the charges against the prisoners was that they
'unlawfully and riotously did assemble to disturb the public peace, and
then did make a great riot and disturbance to the great alarm of his
Majesty's subjects at Harrington on Sunday the 14th inst.  The prisoners
had all been arrested on warrants.  Under the circumstances he did not
intend to now call evidence, but merely to ask for a remand until Monday
next when the case would be gone into.  It was not his desire that the
prisoners should be detained in custody for such a length of time and Mr
Attar, who was present on their behalf, would no doubt make an
application for bailwhich he (the supt.) should not oppose.  Prisoners
were remanded until Monday,

Mr Attar applied for bail, which was granted, each of the prisoners in £
5, and one surety of £ 5.

All the prisoners were bailed, the following being accepted as sureties :

Terence Mourinay of 4 Christian Street, property owner Harrington, for
the three Lennons, Edward Collins and Henry Hughes.

Charles Rogers of 3 Henry Street for John James Fearon and Henry Anderson

Mary Anderson of 3 Henry Street, Harrington for Lewis Robinson and
William Flynn.

John M'Mullen of 19 Curwen Street, Harrington for James M'Mullen and
Robt. Wm. Wilson

John Feckey of 13 Christian Street, Harrington for Peter Doulaghan and
Bernard Murphy.
