Whitehaven, March 28. Last Thursday a butcher in this town was apprehended, and
carried before the Magistrates, on a charge of bigamy. Certificates were
produced of his having been first married at Newcastle, and a few years
afterwards at Bridekirk, in this county. Both wives were present, but the last
refused to give any evidence, which, however, is rendered unnecessary, by
producing the affidavit of the Clergyman. The man is committed to Carlisle gaol,
and the brother, of the first wife has entered into a recognizance of 100L. to
prosecute at the ensuing Assizes.
