SHOCKING ACCIDENT
An accident occurred at the rock cutting at the head of Bassenthwaite Water on the Lake Railway, on Thursday last, to two men of the names of Kirkby and Wood, natives of the neighbourhood. It appears they had three holes bored and intended to fire them all at once. On lighting the fuse two exploded, but the other did not take effect, and on going to examine it they thought it had gone out, and began to take out the stemming when it exploded, and took away Wood's hand, while the head and face of poor Kirkby were burned and bruised in a shocking manner. Very little hopes are entertained of his recovery.
