THE BIBLE AND CHURCH UNION. ______
Union of one sort and another is very much in the air in these days, and “ United” services are not as uncommon as they used to be. For many years past in Cockermouth the anniversary of the Local Branch and the British and Foreign Bible Society has been of the “United” kind, and the place of meeting has gone round. This year it is the Wesleyan Church, and of course, so far as the present Wesleyan Building is concerned, for the last time.
The notice in our advertisement columns of the meeting next Wednesday intimates a lecture by the District Secretary, the Rev. J. Johnston ROE. The subject of the lecture is “The Translator at work,” and it will be of the utmost interest to know how, in the case of all but unknown and savage tribes, the language can be reduced to the written and printed form.
The lecturer is quite competent for his task, and it is hoped that all the churches will so gather together on this occasion as to fill the Wesleyan Church and give an audience worthy of this town and of the occasion. The blending of the interests of the churches is shown in the fact that the Rev. Canon PARKER is to preside.
Collectors are urgently requested to pay in their subscriptions to the Treasurer, Mr. V. J. TURVER, at the Midland Bank this week, in order that a statement of the accounts may be presented at the meeting.
