“BREATH-TAKING” BAZAAR
AT  MARYPORT.
______

The Vicar, the Rev. G. B. CODE writing in the Maryport Parish Magazine
states: -

“The financial result of the bazaar has taken the breath from many people  in
the town already. The mere fact of raising some £800 voluntarily at the
present time is an achievement  that many have thought impossible. But even  these
doubters in many cases have not known all the forces that fought against  us
and have been conquered. Of all moments in the last ten years this seemed the
most impossible for success. Depression and strikes had brought Trade to
something like a standstill. Then, when the bottom seemed to be touched, came
the financial crises in the nation. On top of it all, a General Election which
kept us both Lady ASTOR and Mrs. WINTERINGHAM. After all that we deserved good
weather at least. Instead we had half a gale and a deluge.”

“All the more honour to those who stood their ground with cheerful faces  and
determination. And all the more thanks to our openers who came to encourage
the workers. Particularly we would mention the Bishop and Mrs. WILLIAMS who
jointly opened proceedings on the third day in the emergency and Mr. CROFT of
Workington, who consented at the shortest notice to preside on that day. It
was  a pull all together and it brought us home - £800." It was a pull all
together  and it brought us home - £800."

A Month for Maryport Man.

Robert LEWIS (40), labourer, 1 Cockton’s Yard, Strand Street,  Maryport, was
charged at Maryport Police Court, yesterday with having stolen  3cwt. Of coal
from the Oakum Bay Coal Depot, the property of the Maryport U. D.  C., at 5-35

LEWIS. The other men dropped their bags and ran away. LEWIS said he had got the
coal from a boat, the “Isleman.” In reply to the charge he said, “I am not
going  to answer the charge.”

Defendant pleaded “guilty.”

The Chairman, in sentencing LEWIS to a month’s imprisonment, said his
conduct previously had been very bad. He had been convicted of burglary, assault
and high way robbery, larceny and receiving stolen goods.
