IMPROVEMENT FUND

A SOCIAL WAS HELD IN THE Church Hall on Tuesday night in aid of  the Allonby
Improvement Fund. Over sixty attended. The music for dancing was  supplied by
Mr. Sydney THOMPSON. Mr. J. CUNNINGHAM was M. C., and Mr. J. B.  HODGSON
doorkeeper. The fund was augmented by £2.

RECOGNITION.

A handsome traveling bag has been sent to the Rev. W. LINDOP per  Mr. F. P.
BARBOUR, with a card bearing the following: -

“A small token of appreciation and gratitude in memory of many happy hours  
spent and benefits received under the tutelage and ministration of the Rev. W.  
LONDOP, B. A., Rector of St,. James, Hayton, 1916 - 31. From the members of
the  church choir.”

A WHITEHAVEN DANCE.

The Knights of St. Columba held a successful dance in the  Oddfellows Hall,
on Tuesday, when about 150 attended. The hall had been  beautifully decorated
by the members. The Canadian three - step and the waltz  were the most popular
dances.

 Music was supplied by the Arcadians Band. The M.C.’s were Messrs. R.  LAVERY
and J. BLANEY, and the stewards were Messrs. J. ROGAN, T. McQUILLAM and  A. O’
Neil.

WHITEHAVEN MAN’S
ACHIEVEMENT.

Mr. W. P. BOWMAN,a  Whitehaven man, has written, “The story  of the Times,”
a work of 336 pages, the compliation of which represents a great  task and an
outstanding journalistic achievement.

 Mr. BOWMAN who served on the Times staff for twenty years and is now  a
free-lance journalist is the eldest son of the late Mr. Thomas BOWMAN, who  
carried on an extensive grocery business in Whitehaven, and was a member of the  
Town and Harbour Trustee Board and later an Alderman of the Town Council.
