WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.
(To the  Editor)

Sir, - It is now ten years since the formation of the British Legion,  and at such a time as this, one’s thoughts go out to the large number of unemployed ex-servicemen in West Cumberland, and through no fault of their own,  do not know what a day’s work is, and who, for several reasons, would be unable  to do any for quite a long time.

Surely it is high time the Government changed the incidence of unemployment   benefit. In West Cumberland we have spent during the last ten years £12,000,000  to £14,000,000, and we have got no return for it at all. It ought not to be beyond the wit of our statesmen to devise a scheme for placing a certain amount of this money at the disposal of this county to be spent on improving existing  roads, river drainage, reclaiming waste land, etc. Most of the rivers in the  valleys of Cumberland could do with cleaning.

I have appealed to the Chairman of the Cumberland County Council several   times to press the Government to adopt some such scheme for dealing with   unemployment pay, and to urge other County Councils also to press the Government  to do this.

Yours, etc.,

H. T. PAPE
Lodore Hotel, Keswick.
