The remembrance service was held in the Clifton Church Rooms, on Sunday evening, when the seating accommodation was taxed by a congregation drawn from all the places of worship. The service was conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. W. ROBERTS, while the musical portion was led by the combined choirs. Mr. GLAISTER presiding at the organ. Mr. W. LITTLE and Mr. G. McEWEN read the first and second Lessons respectively. The names of the fallen, numbering twenty, were read and remembered before God, when the bugles sounded the Reveille and the Last Post.
Between these two Mr. R. McCOLE placed a wreath on the “Roll of Honour” on behalf of the British Legion, the members of which - both sections - were present. The sermon delivered by the Rev. E. WALKER, Vicar of St. Nicholas, Whitehaven, was greatly appreciated, especially that part of it in which he strongly urged all at this time to “Follow after things which make for peace.” His appeal was the more valuable because it came from the heart of one who was conversant, directly with the horrors of the war. During a great portion of those four years he acted as Interpreter to the Chinese Labour Battalion in France.
The offering amounting, £2 16s was given to the Head-Quarters’ Funds of the British Legion.
