It was washing day and Willie, a pupil at a village  school near Cockermouth
had been kept at home to mind the baby. For half an hour  the youngsters had
been playing together in the garden, when mother was startled  by howling.
Hastening out of the washhouse she demanded to know from Willie what  he had been doing to the baby.

“Nowt Ma!” was the reply, “but he dug that whol and  noo wants mah at tak it
intul t’ hoose.”
