Recasting of the bells of St. Michael’s Parish Church,  Workington, has been
completed earlier than was expected, and on Tuesday they  were delivered to
the church from the Loughborough foundry of Messrs. John  TAYLOR.

Re-hanging will take more than a fortnight, but it is  expected the bells
will be ringing March 1 when the Bishop of Carlisle, Dr.  Thomas BLOOMER, will
visit Workington to conduct a confrimation service and  re-dedicate the peal.

With the bells have arrived metal head stocks to  replace the well worn
wooden ones.

The original inscriptions on the bells have all been  retained and, in
addition, the biggest bell, the tenor, has been inscribed to  commemorate the work
of the late Mr. Alfred J. SANDERSON, who was a church  warden and for 60 years
a bell ringer at St. Michael’s.

The return of the bells coincides with the  announcement by the Rector, Canon
Trevor J. JONES, that the bell fund is now  within a few pounds of the £1,500
needed.
