Increasing interest is being shown in the Roman occupation of  Cumberland. It
is held by some archaeologists that Hadrian’s Wall, stopping at
Bowness-on-Solway, left the Cumberland Coast dangerously exposed for a distance  of 40 miles from Bowness to St. Bees Head, to raids from Scotland, and that the
headland of St. Bees should have been the real western end of the Wall; also  that,
in between, existed a system of signal stations by which news of hostile
raids could be collected and transmitted quickly to the Romans guarding the  shore.
Southwards, beyond Bowness, the raiders could no longer enter Roman
territory on foot, but they could come very easily in boats, for the Scottish  Coast
is only eight miles from Beckfast, near Allonby, and only 12 miles from
Maryport.
