WHITEHAVEN YOUTHS CHARGED
AT  WORKINGTON.

Police reinforcements had to be called out in  Workington last Saturday night
when a fight involving a considerable number of  people developed in Warwick
Place.

There was a sequel in Workington Court on Wednesday  when fines of £10 were
imposed on Henry WHARTON, 18, drayman of Purser Road,  Salterbeck, and
Frederick MARTIN, 19, serving soldier, of Loweswater Avenue,  Woodhouse, Whitehaven,
who pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour likely to  occasion a breach of the
peace.

P. C. CRESSWELL said that he and P. C. HIGGINBOTHAM  went to the square at
10.45 p. m. and found several police officers already  there. There was a crowd
of residents and youths, one of whom had already been  arrested by P. C.
WEYMOUTH, who was awaiting assistance.

IN A FIGHTING MOOD.

MARTIN and WHARTON started fighting and as other  youths present were also in
a fighting mood it was considered necessary in the  interests of the public
safety to stop the fight and arrest them,” he  said.

“It happens that there has been a very serious affray  and we were going to
stop it,” commented the chairman, Ald W. A. WALKER. He gave  the youths two
weeks in which to pay their fines, with the alternative of two  months in prison.

The youth arrested by P. C. WEYMOUTH, John J. PULLEN  20, serving soldier,
Windermere Road, Woodhouse, Whitehaven, then pleaded guilty  to being drunk and
disorderly.

HEAD INJURIES.

Inspector T. JACKSON said that when the constable  arrived on the scene he
found two youths lying in the gutter with head injuries.  A bystander shouted, “
There’s the man that did it” and pointed to PULLEN, who  was running away.

PULLEN was arrested and became aggressive, saying,  “I am a serving soldier.
I am not going to any Police  Station.”

Another youth tried to interfere with the constable,  closing with him and
knocking a torch out of his grasp. He later got away and  had not been traced.
PULLEN was taken in a police vehicle to the Police Station  where he was
detained.

“The law being what it is we can’t fine you more  than £2 on this charge.”
commented Ald. WALKER.
