It is doubtful if anyone in the district has a more  intimate knowledge of
the housing market than Mr. Henry SANDERSON, the 80 year  old chairman of the
Workington Benefit Building Society.

At the annual meeting this week, the 21st he has  addressed Mr. SANDERSON
referred to the improving standards of accommodation now  being enjoyed. “We do
not insist that a house should be newly built before we  will make an advance,
but it must be soundly constructed and have three items  which are regarded as
essentials in the home of to-day - electricity, a hot  water system and a
bathroom. Housing standards are improving all the time.  People who see fine
homes illustrated in magazines, on television and in the  cinema, are no longer
content to accept the standards which were good enough for  their parents. This
is exactly in line with our own views, particularly  as  we have to look ahead
when we consider any loan. Many advances are paid off in a  comparatively
short time, but others may continue for twenty years or more. We  try to consider
how desirable the house will be in another two decades, if the  present
standards and the current movements of population in the borough are  maintained.
