WELL-KNOWN MARYPORT  MAN.

Mr. William PENN, Bounty Avenue, Ewanrigg, was interred at  Maryport Cemetery
on Wednesday after a service in All Soul’s Church conducted by  the Vicar,
the Rev. J. N. DAVIDSON. More than 300 people attended to pay their  last
respect to one of Maryport’s best known men.

Aged 80, Mr. PENN died on Sunday after a short illness. He was one  of the
clerical officers in the original Maryport Labour Exchange, a post from  which
he retired about 15 years ago.

CHURCH WORK

His big interest in life was in All Souls’ Church. He was a  sidesman for
many years, a churchwarden, and the first secretary of the  Parochial Church
Council, an office which he held until about 3 years ago. In  other branches he
was likewise active.

Mr. PENN served in the R.A.S.C. during the first World War,  principally in
Africa, and later he was a founder member of Maryport British  Legion Branch
and for a period was organizing secretary for the sister  counties.

Keenly interested in sport, he was a founder of the former  Ellenborough
Reading Room annual sports. He led an active life and assisted many  organizations
and causes at different times.

He is survived by his wife, four sons, Mr. Joseph W. PENN, J. P.,  Maryport;
Mr. John C. PENN, of Grasslot; Mr. Ernest PENN, London and Mr. Austin  PENN,
Seaton, and one daughter, Miss. Mollie PENN, of Bounty  Avenue.
