A prominent sportsman in the Barrow area and at one time employed  in the
Whitehaven District Office of Lakeland Laundries Ltd., 25 year old Nigel
MILLIGAN met his death tragically while skating near Bowness Bay, Lake  Windermere,
shortly before midnight on Sunday.

The youngest son of Mr. W. G. MILLIGAN, managing director of  Lakeland
Laundries, he was staying at a Windermere Hotel for the week-end with a  friend, Dr.
B. BAYNE, of Barrow. They were skating on the ice during thick fog  when Dr.
BAYNE heard cries for help and gave the alarm. The body was found  during
dragging operations on Monday by police and firmen.

Mr. MILLIGAN, who lived at Beck Head, Witherslack, was shortly to  become
engaged to a girl from the south of England. He was educated at Oundle  School
and did his National Service in the Navy.

He then joined Lakeland Laundries, with whom he was latterly  assistant works
manager at Lancaster. Before that, to gain experience, he served  in many of
the Companies district offices, including Whitehaven.

For the past six seasons Mr. MILLIGAN had played stand-off half for  the
Furness R. U. Club, while he also served Barrow Cricket Club for a number of
years as wicketkeeper.
