WIGTON LOCAL BOARD THURSDAY.

Mr. John GATE presided.-A letter was read from the Local Government Board asking for the names of the owners of land who had agreed to sell to the Board for sewerage purposes, those who were neutral, and those who refused to sell.-Some dissatisfaction was expressed at this, from the fact that a good deal of delay would be incurred, whereas Mr. SMITH told them when he was down at the inquiry that they could have the work done in six months.
The Medical Officer reported that during the quarter ending June 30
there were 31 deaths registered in the district.

WIGTON COUNTY COURT.
At this Court, on Friday, Mr. B. HETHERINGTON, SouthEnd, Wigton, sued Mr. John ROBINSON, Bridge Bank, for £6 10s damage to a field of about 3½ acres of turnips, potatoes, cabbage, &c., by defendant's own cows getting into it.   There was no defence other than that the claim was excessive.  The estimate of the damage by various witnesses was very conflicting; and the jury, who heard the case, gave a verdict for £2.
The Rev. J.M. LOWTHER, Bolton Rectory, sued Mr. Jos. WATSON, Daleside, for £7 10s, rent for seven acres of common land on Barron Fell, at 25s per year. Mr. WANNOP was for plaintiff, and Mr. RIGG was for defendant.   It was contended that the land belonged to Bolton Rectory; but Mr. RIGG argued that Mr. LOWTHER had only the right to graze two sheep on it.  Defendant had had this land for six years.   Mr. LOWTHER said this was owing to his aversion to legal proceedings.  Case adjourned for a month.
Mr. MARRS, Wigton, sued the Maryport and Carlisle Railway Company for damage to a box of butter in transit from Wigton to Carlisle in June last.   Mrs. J. RETFORD, Carlisle, said the butter was all of a heap at one end, and she told them it would have to be returned at once.  It was stated that the receiver had signed for it as being in good condition, and a verdict was given for the defendants.
