West Ward Board of Guardians Print E-mail

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of this Board was held at the Lowther Castle Inn, Hackthorpe, on Wednesday last, W.H. PARKIN, Esq., in the chair.

There were also present Rev. S. WHITESIDE, Rev. J. DARLING, Messrs J. JAMESON, W. NOBLE, T. BIRD, W. TOWERS, J.P. SHEPHERD (clerk), T. RICHARDSON (relieving officer), and R. RUDDHAM (workhouse master).
A communication was read from the Local Government Board, transmitting copy of a letter received by them from the Secretary of State for the Home Department, respecting the case of a pauper who, it appeared, had been clothed in a sack upon his removal from the West Ward Union Workhouse at Shap to the prison at Kendal,
in July last.-After some discussion, it was resolved that the Clerk reply to this communication to the effect that the Guardians considered that the Workhouse Master had fully complied with the direction of the Local Government Board respecting the clothing of paupers (who tore up their clothing), viz., in a coarse material, but clean and sound.
A letter was also read from Mr. Chas. HUNTON, auditor for the Northumberland, Cumberland, and Westmorland districts, justifying the statements previously made by him with regard to the disallowance by him of the sum of 3l 5s 6d, being the amount charged by the Overseers of Patterdale for relief supplied to them in the shape of tea, &c., which was not in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Board.
There was no other public business of interest transacted.
