COCKERMOUTH GUARDIANS.-MONDAY. Mr. PEARSON presided.-A communication was received from the Local Government Board respecting the proposal for a new Workhouse. It concluded as follows:-"The Board have no desire to impose additional expense upon the guardians, by the maintenance of two establishments, but, on the contrary, they are of opinion that the most desirable as well as the most economical step for the guardians to take would be the erection of an entirely new Workhouse, on a fresh site. Under these circumstances, the Board must decline to approve the plans submitted by the guardians for altering and adding to the existing building, or the proposed buildings on the adjacent garden ground; and as the Workhouse cannot be allowed to remain in its present state, the Board have again to request the guardians to take the subject into their early consideration." The CHAIRMAN said the Local Government Board alone were to blame, having sanctioned the enlargements and the purchase of ground. He would fight the thing to the bitter end. He moved that a letter be sent to the effect that a new Workhouse was not absolutely necessary; that certain additions were necessary to the present building; and that to build a new Workhouse would be a waste of money.- An amendment was proposed to the effect that a committee be appointed to look after a suitable site for a new Workhouse. Mr. ALEXANDER pointed out that the Carlisle Workhouse had only cost £13,194.-Mr. MUSGRAVE said he had gone through the house that day and he never saw a place cleaner and better.-On the vote being taken, 20 were for the motion, and 14 for the amendment.
