WAR / YESTERDAY MAILS. Yesterday mails arrived from Heligoland and Bremen, bringing Bremen and Altona Gazettes to a late date. Dutch Papers to the 29th also came to hand. The former contradict the statements of the latter, of the Allies having passed the Rhine, at three different points. No such movement has yet taken place; but it is understood that all the troops are moving along the mountain road to Switzerland. The CROWN PRINCE OF SWEDEN has issued a Proclamation, addressed to the inhabitants of Holstein, in which it is announced, that the treaties between the Allies having stipulated the junction of Norway to the Kingdom of Sweden, (certain compensations being fixed for Denmark) he occupies Holstein as a pledge for the due cession of Norway to the Swedish Crown. DAVOUST appeared determined to defend Hamburgh to the last extremity. He had ordered such of the inhabitants, as have not laid in a supply of provisions sufficient to last till next July, to quit the place. All the houses upon the Hamburgh berg, which lies between Hamburgh and Altona, were to be demolished; and all other houses, within 600 toises of that city, in every direction, were consigned to the same fate. It is a well authenticated fact, that after the French re-established their domination in that city, they seized on young ladies of the first families, and compelled them to work with common labourers on the fortifications, as a punishment for having embroidered the standards of the Hanseatic legion !! The retreat of SOULT from Bayonne to Dax, 221 miles N. E. of Bayonne, shews us the signal nature of our late successes. It is probable that LORD WELLINGTON will immediately advance to Bayonne. LORD and LADY CASTLEREAGH were not able to sail from Harwich before yesterday. ========================================= |
