09 January 1902 Border Regiment Casualties

The War Office returns issued on Thursday night contained the following casualties: - 1st Border Regiment. - 5,016 A. PAGE, killed; 3,454, A. REEVEBY, slightly wounded, leg. Holfontein, December 29th. 4th Border Regiment, attached 2nd Wilts Regiment. - 1,706 J. BRIGHT, accidentally severely wounded, near Nylstroom, December 30th.        The casualty list issue on Friday night reports that 7,460 Private L. PORTER, Brampton of the volunteer Company the Border Regiment, is dangerously ill from enteric at Germiston. Information of the illness of Private PORTER was received on Saturday night by his father in a letter from Carlisle Castle, in which the officer in command stated, "I am to convey to you the Commander-in-Chief's sympathy and regret."        His father at once wired the War Office for any later information, and the same evening received the following telegram in reply:-        "Lowie PORTER dangerously ill, enteric, Germiston, 1st January. No later information. - Adjutant-General."        Private PORTER is the eldest son of Mr. William PORTER, joiner, etc., Brampton, and is a member of the Brampton Rifle Corps. He is only some 22 years of age, and went out with the Second Active Service Company scarcely twelve months ago.
