FOOLHARDINESS. The man CROMBY, whom we mentioned in our last, as having for the sake of a few half-pence, leaped off Eden Bridge into the water, repeated his mad feat on Friday evening, before thousands of spectators. He proceeded to the canal on Saturday evening, for the purpose of leaping off the mast head of one of the vessels into the Basin, but was very properly prevented by the authorities of the place who turned back a great concourse of people. He again proceeded to Eden bridge, and having gathered the needful, with the utmost apparent sang froid, pipe in mouth, he made his fourth leap, and though a cold night, played many antics in the water, to the amusement and amid the cheers of the assembled crowd. The adventurer was at Longtown on Monday night, where after a due announcement of his intention, he leaped from the centre arch of the Longtown bridge into the Esk - a height of 39 feet - in the presence of at least 1200 spectators. ****** CARLISLE CRICKET CLUB. Since the commencement of the season the practice nights of the club have been exceedingly well attended, and several very spirited games have been played, with a perceptible improvement in science and skill. We have much pleasure therefore, in announcing that several matches with neighbouring clubs are in contemplation, and one is already arranged with the Northumberland club, to come off on the Carlisle ground, on Thursday next, the 13th instant; the wickets will be pitched at half past ten o'clock a.m.; and we have no doubt the lovers of this fine and truly English game, will be much gratified by the contest. ****** Mr. S. J. BURCH, who for upwards of two years so efficiently discharged the duties of house-surgeon to the Cumberland Infirmary, was on Saturday last unanimously elected house- surgeon to the Lincoln County Hospital. there are, we believe, already several candidates for the office rendered vacant by Mr. BURCH's resignation. We understand that when Mr. BURCH was appointed, there were 22 candidates for the office. ****** THE CUMBERLAND INFIRMARY. In our obituary last week we announced the death of Rev. Hugh ELLIOTT in this institution; and as we have heard it remarked since that the infirmary was not intended for persons of his station in life, it is necessary to state that the deceased gentleman was in no way a burden on the funds of the Infirmary, but paid for the accommodation and advantages it afforded him. The system of admitting patients under similar circumstances is, we believe, frequently adopted in such institutions. ****** THE DROUGHT. The rivers of Carlisle have been reduced by the recent dry weather to mere streams, and while manufactories on the River Caldew, dependent on water power, cannot at present work more than half time, the Peteril is, as nearly as may be, dry in many places. It is a fact worthy of notice at present, which has been observed by persons of long experience, that since the system of draining lands has been so extensively carried out, the rivers during the summer seasons have been much lower than formerly, owing no doubt to the rain-water being carried off more quickly. ****** LORD CARLISLE'S RENT DAY. On Monday last the rent day of the Earl of Carlisle was held at the Howard Arms, Brampton, instead of, as formerly, in the ancient hall of Naworth. After the business of the day the tenantry, to the number of about 100, and about a dozen other individuals, dined together at the inn, upon which Lord MORPETH presided. Amongst the toasts of the evening his Lordship took an opportunity to propose the health of Master ORRIDGE, who was present on the occasion, and complimented him highly for the manly promptitude and discretion he showed on discovering the late disastrous fire. The young gentleman replied in suitable terms, and the frequent allusions to the sad event which has made Naworth desolate, gave unusual interest to this rent day. |
