BANK HALL FRIENDLY SOCIETY.

On the morning of the 31st ult., the sequestered village of Hall-bank
Gate was a scene of unusual bustle and animation, as the annual festival of
this benevolent institution was held on that day. The day was favourable, and
the crowds assembled from all corners to witness the festivity.

Shortly after nine o'clock the excellent amateur band of the Kirkhouse
Collieries paraded in front of the Club Room, clad in their uniform, and
bearing their magnificent flags and banners. They played "God save the Queen," and
other favourite airs, under the skillful conduct of Mr. ORRE, of Carlisle.

Shortly afterwards the members assembled, and the Club roll being
called over by Mr. MINGINS, the secretary to the Society, a procession was
immediately formed with the appropriate insignia, and, headed by the band, they
marched to the parish church at Farlam, where an eloquent sermon was preached by
the Rev. George TANDY, of Lanercost, from Ephesians, chap. 4, v. 28. The
discourse was heard with profound attention; and afterwards the members and their
friends returned in procession to their club-room. There an excellent dinner had
been provided by Mr. RUDDICK, of Bankhall Inn, and under the able presidency
of Mr. William DOBSON, a pleasantly afternoon succeeded by dancing, until "the
wee short hour ayont the twal," terminated the festivities.
