 Wigton Urban
The Council met on Wednesday evening, Mr. BANKS, of Highmoor presiding.
The circular issued by the County War Fund Committee was considered.  It was not considered necessary to start another fund, but it was decided to ask the Wigton Volunteer Band to attend the various places of worship in the town on arranged dates, and that collections be made at the services.
The Proposed Abolition of Fairs.
With reference to the proposed abolition of Wigton Fairs (consequent upon the proposal to purchase from Lord LECONFIELD the market rights and tolls of the town,)  the Secretary of State wrote stating that the representation should be made by means of a resolution passed by the Urban District Council, which should state that it would be for the convenience and advantage of the public that they be abolished, and specify the reasons, and which should also be accompanied by the written consent of Lord LECONFIELD, the owner.  The Clerk said he had drafted a resolution station that it was expedient for the better government of the urban district of Wigton and greater convenience of the public that the fairs usually held in the said district be abolished, on the grounds that (1) they were becoming obsolete; (2) that horses alone were not exposed for sale on fair days; (3) that provided in two auction marts within the district; and (4) that the consent of the Lord of the Barony of Wigton (the owner of the fairs) had been obtained.  On the proposition of Mr. TAYLOR, seconded by Mr. BARNES, this resolution was adopted.
                                                                 The Christmas Market
As St. THOMAS'S DAY this year falls on a Thursday, Mr. TAYLOR moved that the Christmas market be held as usual on Tuesday, December 19th.  MR. GIBSON seconded the motion, which was carried.
