EXECUTION OF WILLIAM CROUCH.

On Monday morning at eight o'clock, William CROUCH suffered the
extreme penalty of the law in front of the gaol of Newgate, having been
convicted at
the last sessions of the Central Criminal Court of the murder of his wife.

He expressed himself fully conscious of the enormity of his crime,
and
added, that he had tried to exhibit by outward signs the sincerity of that
repentance which he felt inwardly, but that he could not do so.

At five minutes to eight, all being in readiness, the procession
moved
from the press-room, through the Chapel yard, towards the scaffold; the rev.
ordinary reading the impressive service for the burial of the dead.

The crowd outside the prison, which, up to seven o'clock, had been by
no means numerous, was by this time increased to a great extent, and there
could not have been less than ten thousand persons present.

Within a very few seconds of his arrival on the scaffold, CALCRAFT
had
completed the awful preparations; and having drawn a cap over the wretched
man's face, retired. The Rev. Mr. DAVIS who had continued reading the burial
service, was in the act of repeating the Lord's Prayer, the prisoner joining
fervently with him, when the  signal was given, the drop fell, and in a few
moments CROUCH had ceased to exist.
